Sofa Types: Simply Explained
There are many types of sofas. Read on to learn the subtle but important differences.
Standard Sofa
A Standard Sofa has a long bench shape. It can fit at least three people, has arms on each side, and a back.
Loveseat
A Loveseat has the same qualities as a standard sofa except that it is smaller. They are traditionally made to seat two people and work well in tighter spaces.
Futon
A Futon is a sofa that can be transformed into a bed. Many futons do not have arms to make the conversion process easier.
Day Bed
A Day Bed is a half sofa, half bed combo. It is normally the size of a twin bed and some styles have an additional mattress that can be pulled out to sleep two.
Sleeper Sofa
A Sleeper Sofa is a sofa with an additional mattress like sofa cushioning built into it. These are also referred to as pull out sofas.
Chaise Lounge
A Chaise Lounge means “long chair” in French which pairs with the description quite well. It is a chair with a seat long enough to support the legs.
Sofa Chaise
A Sofa Chaise is exactly what is sounds like. It is a sofa with a chaise at the end that provides a longer seated piece. This is also known as a chaise sectional or L shaped sofa.
Sectionals
A Sectional is essentially a sofa with extended sections that make an L or U shape. They come in at least two pieces and seat anywhere from 4-10 people.
